We call it LIT…because it is!
More than an after-school reading program
The Academy improves literacy rates through the holistic support of their family, schools, and community members. We seek to eradicate disproportionate literacy outcomes for Black and Brown students, families and communities one neighborhood at a time.

TK-3 Literacy Hub
When teachers and families identify that additional literacy instruction is needed, we lead daily lessons based on the reading science.
Our literacy specialists are trained in literacy development, anti-racist, and liberatory practices. They work with teachers and families to support students’ progress.
Lit Lab Commons
Students participating in the TK-3 Literacy Hub benefit from homework support from the people who know them well.
To support families, siblings of students in the Hub can attend as well!
Family Reading Club
When adults get support with literacy strategies, they can support students’ literacy strategies.
Our Reading Club increases families’ capacity to support at home, in the community, and advocate on behalf of students.
Teacher Tune Up Tuesdays
Teachers at participating 3Ls sites come together to tune up instructional practices and strengthen cross-site collaboration.
Tune Up Tuesdays is a literary space where teachers can collaborate, explore tactics, share resources, and meet with site-based leaders to build upon the initial structure of the 3Ls Academy.
Leadership Coaching
3Ls envisions a space where site-based leaders from across Oakland schools come together to realize the vision of their city's education system as one aligned toward liberation and anti-racism initiatives. They seek an environment in which learning, literacy, and leadership are interconnected for those historically oppressed by it.
School leaders participate in coaching that increases family engagement, improves instruction, increases students’ literacy, and strengthens leadership capacity.
Literacy Block Party
Each year’s Fellowship will culminate with a Literacy Block Party centering around student work. It is a way for students to share what they have learned with others and enjoy themselves. The party will feature reading activities, crafts that go along with the theme of literacy, performances about how books inspire them in their lives and experiences!
